Commitment for life !!

Raise a voice against cruelty towards animals

Tethering a dog is cruel and should be stopped. Camellia Satija, Founder Trustee, Kindness to Animals and Respect for Environment (KARE) answers some of the queries on chaining.

Q : If dogs are to be confined - what conditions should be provided ?

CS : Dogs should be confined only if necessary, and for very short times. The area should be sheltered from the weather, be safe and have a comfortable bedding, water and supervision. Chained dogs should not be left alone.

Q : Should chaining or tethering ever be allowed ?

CS : Chaining of dogs should be done only for the purpose of traing him, or taking him to the vet.You could tether ypur dog if you are doing anerrand outside your house and you are close to him.Of course you must 'chain' your dog iwhen you are taking him for a walk.Other than that, chaining is a big no. IUnstead you can allocate an open area in your house/garden (supervising him at regular intervals), where he would be free to roam around.

Q : What can be done to correct the problem of tethering dogs?

CS : Create awareness! Educate dog owners about the cruelty involved in tethering dogs.Tell them about the PCAACT 1960 and have the law implemented.

Q : Why should a community outlaw the continuous chaining or tethering of dogs?

CS : Because it is cruel reasons, and because the law says so ! Any community can be judged for its level of civilization depending on the manner in which it treats its animals. Moreover we should be morally obliged to do so.

FAQs on Grooming

Cleanliness is next to godliness and it applies to our canine friends as well. To keep your dog clean, healthy and looking his gleaming best, follow a grooming routine that suits his coat type. We all love to add on to the grace and good looks of our pets but are not well aware about nitty-gritty of dogs’ grooming. Gauri and Urmila of TailWaggers Pet Salon, Mumbai answer some of the frequently asked questions on grooming.

Q : Do I need to wash my dogs face everyday? My dogs’ eyes run a lot, what should I do?

Gauri and Urmila :  Unlike humans, dogs’ do not need their faces to be washed everyday. But what you can do on a daily basis is to wipe your dogs’ eyes with cotton wool dipped in lukewarm water. This will get rid of the discharge that might have built up around the corners. In case of long-haired breeds, make sure no hair falls into the eyes since that can cause irritation and can lead to a severe infection.

If your dogs eyes run more than normal, you need to get him checked by your veterinarian for an eye infection or if there is any problem with the tear glands.

Q : What are the important grooming equipment I should have?

Gauri and Urmila :   The kind of grooming equipment you will need depend on your dog’s coat type. There are lots of brushes and combs available in pet shops. There are bristle brushes, pin brushes, slickers, combs and gloves. Bristle brushes are good for short-haired breeds as they stimulate your dog's skin, spreading the natural oils present that keep his coat shiny and skin healthy. Some people prefer using hound gloves to bristle brushes for short-coated breeds. These brushes fit over the hand like a glove and have a cloth base with rubber nubs that capture loose hair. Dogs enjoy being groomed by them because they like the feeling that they are being petted.

The pin brushes have long straight metal pins attached to a rubber backing and are mostly oval-shaped. They are excellent for fluff-drying dogs with long hair.  Slicker brushes are most useful but they need to be used carefully since they can hurt the dog if wrongly used. The bent wire bristles of the slicker grasp and remove your dog’s loose undercoat. Dogs who are combed regularly with a slicker seldom get matted. The other piece of equipment you could get is a hair-dryer. This comes in very handy especially if you have a long-coated breed.

Q :  My Dog MnM was given Coronavirus booster, within half an hour, he was vomiting and became extremely lethargic. After 2 hours, he suddenly began to suffer from itching and a violent allergic reaction set in all over his body. His vet advised me to bring him in immediately for another injection. The reaction subsided in a couple of hours but the facial oedema left him only after 24 hours. Please guide what to do when the next Coronavirus booster is due.
