Raise a voice against cruelty towards animals

Tethering a dog is cruel and should be stopped. Camellia Satija, Founder Trustee, Kindness to Animals and Respect for Environment (KARE) answers some of the queries on chaining.

Q : Why is tethering dangerous to dogs?

CS : Because he is totally helpless in situations where he may want to escape. For example, if he is harassed by other humans, stoned, hit, or attacked by other animals like a snake or a wild animal. Besides, if there is a natural calamity (flood, fire etc), how on earth is he expected to protect himself? The poor dog might even strangle himself trying to escape from some mishap.

Q : Are these dogs dangerous to other animals?

CS : Yes, they are to an extent. If they get unchained, they would attack other animals. In case some animals came close to the tethered dog, they could be attacked and get harmed.

Q : Are tethered dogs otherwise treated well?

CS : No, they are not treated well. Any person who can chain his dog for hours and days, does not even provide them with the basic food, water, shelter or veterinary care. They are left outside, exposed to the vagaries of nature, devoid of warmth and love. This is against the law and the offenders should be severely punished and the dog impounded and rehomed.

Q : Are the areas where tethered dogs confined usually comfortable?

CS : Not at all! How can it be? That little patch of land is his bedroom, garden, walking area, his dinning room and toilet. Such owners don’t even bother to clean the area, where is the question of comfort. It is the worst form of punishment a dog can get (for no rhyme or reason).
